Chief Executive Officer
Mr. Buchanan became Chief Executive Officer on April 1, 2020. He initially joined the Company as President and Chief Executive Officer Designate and as a member of the Board of Directors, effective January 6, 2020. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Buchanan served in various roles of increased leadership and responsibility across Walmart Inc. (previously Walmart Stores, Inc.), most recently as Chief Merchant for Walmart U.S. eCommerce. He also served as the Chief Merchant at Sam’s Club where he led a merchandising team and oversaw activities including assortment, private brand strategy, pricing, global sourcing, packaging, replenishment and supply chain. Mr. Buchanan has also served in a broad set of senior merchandising roles at Walmart Inc. Prior to his tenure at Walmart, Mr. Buchanan held a variety of positions in finance at Dell and spent five years at Accenture focused on the retail industry. Since November 2020, Mr. Buchanan has also served as a member of the board of directors of TreeHouse Foods, Inc.
Executive Vice President - Chief Human Resources Officer
As EVP – CHRO, Melanie Berman is responsible for the company’s human resources operations including all aspects of the team member experience, which includes compensation and benefits, talent management, team member development, communications and diversity and inclusion. Prior to joining Michaels, she was Vice President – Human Resources at Anthem, Inc. Prior to her time at Anthem, Inc., she has held numerous Human Resources leadership positions including CHRO at Baker Corp., CHRO at Global Power Equipment Group and Vice President Human Resources, Global R&D at Novartis Alcon. Melanie holds a master’s degree in Industrial and Organizational Psychology from Baruch College in New York City and a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from University at Albany – State University of New York.
Executive Vice President – General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer and Secretary
Mr. Cheatham was named Executive Vice President – General Counsel, Chief Compliance Officer and Secretary in April 2020. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Cheatham served in various roles of legal leadership at Walmart, most recently as Senior Vice President – General Counsel of Walmart U.S. In that role, Mr. Cheatham served on the executive team and led the legal function of the U.S. business unit. He also served as Senior Vice President and General Counsel, Walmart International and Vice President and General Counsel over Information Technology, Intellectual Property and Walmart.com. In addition to his 16-year tenure at Walmart, Mr. Cheatham has extensive in-house and private practice experience.
Executive Vice President - Chief Financial Officer
Mr. Diamond assumed the role of Executive Vice President and Chief Financial Officer on September 1, 2020. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Diamond served as Chief Financial Officer for Pizza Hut U.S. market. Throughout his career, Mr. Diamond has led teams in both the U.S. and Europe across multiple industry verticals spanning finance, strategy, development, business analysis, supply chain, technology and legal. His background includes several leadership positions including Chief Financial Officer for Pizza Hut’s European market, Chief Growth Officer for Pizza Hut’s European and United Kingdom business and Director of Strategy for Pizza Hut International. Prior to joining Pizza Hut, Diamond served in roles at The Boston Consulting Group, Svoboda Capital Partners and Merrill Lynch & Co. Mr. Diamond earned a Master’s of Business Administration from Harvard Business School and a Bachelor’s degree in Finance from the University of Notre Dame.
J. Robert Koch
Executive Vice President - Stores and Development
Mr. Koch was named Executive Vice President – Real Estate and Artistree in January 2021, after serving as Executive Vice President – Stores and Development of the Company since May 2018. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Koch served as Executive Vice President of Business Development at Office Depot, Inc. from August 2017 to May 2018, after having served as Senior Vice President of Real Estate at Office Depot since December 2013. In his 20 years with Office Depot, he has held various key leadership positions in both Finance and Operations, including Senior Vice President, Merchandising; Senior Vice President, Real Estate, Construction and Strategy; Vice President, North American Finance; and Vice President of Financial Planning and Corporate Development. Prior to joining Office Depot in 1994, Mr. Koch held various positions in the corporate finance division of Blockbuster Entertainment.
Executive Vice President – Chief Information Officer
Mr. Wang joined Michaels as Executive Vice President — Chief Information Officer in June 2020. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Wang held the position of Chief Technology Officer at SMHQ Technologies, Ltd. Prior to that, he has held various technology leadership positions including Senior Vice President – Chief Technology Officer at Sam’s Club and Vice President of Analytics and Decision Platforms at Walmart where he built a team of world class talent in engineering. Mr. Wang’s experience and passion include mathematics, artificial intelligence, robotics, machine learning, software engineering and information security. He is a graduate of electrical engineering and computer science at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
Executive Vice President – Chief Operating Officer, Stores
Mr. Venezia was named Executive Vice President – Chief Operating Officer, Stores in January 2021. Prior to joining the Company, Mr. Venezia held multiple retail leadership positions, including as President of Bridgestone Retail Operations, LLC since June 2017 and as EVP – Global Operations of Toys “R” Us and Babies “R” Us” from February 2014 to May 2017. Prior to joining Toys “R” Us, Mr. Venezia also served in various roles with Kangaroo Express, TitleMax and Walmart.
